22일 오후 2시, 서울 광화문에 위치한 주한미국대사관 앞에서는 '반동성애기독시민연대', '자유인권실천국민행동', '건강한사회를위한국민연대', '한국교회수호결사대' 외 10개 시민단체 주최로, "동성애 반대하는 대한민국 국민들을 짓밟는 주한미국대사관은 즉각 사과하라!"며 기자회견을 열었다.

다음은 성명서 전문내용이다.

또다시 한국문화와 동성애 반대국민 모욕하고 짓밟은 주한 미대사관은 사과하라!

우리는 지난해 5월 27일 광화문에서 건물 외벽에 무지개현수막을 게시한 주한미대사관을 규탄하는 기자회견을 열고 성명서를 발표했다. 그리고 직접 전화로 항의를 했고, 트럼프 대통령과 펜스 부통령에게 트위터로 영문 성명서를 보냈다. 그 후 작년 6월 8일 트럼프 행정부가 LGBT 기념의 달인 6월 동안 각국 대사관의 깃대에 동성애 관련 깃발을 게양하고자 하는 미 대사관들의 요청을 거부했다고 NBC뉴스에 보도되기까지 했다.

그럼에도 불구하고 주한미대사관은 올해 또다시 코로나19(COVID-19) 사태로 어수선한 와중에 무지개현수막을 건물 외벽에 게시하는 폭거를 저지르고 말았다. 이는 명백히 동성애를 반대하는 대한민국국민을 무시하고 한국문화를 짓밟은 만행이기에 즉각 사과해야 한다.

우리는 지난해 성명서를 통해 미국과 한국 간의 강력한 60년 동맹을 훼손하는 퀴어축제 행사장 내 부스 설치 및 광화문 미국 대사관 외벽에 무지개 “프라이드” 현수막 게시를 지적한 적이 있다. 이는 명백히 한국 국민들에게 심각한 모욕감을 안겨준 것이며, 미국의 국가이익에 전혀 도움이 안 되는 잘못된 처신임을 지적한 바 있다.

그런데 유감스럽게도 주한미대사관은 올해 또다시 미국에 우호적인 한국 국민들의 가슴을 아프게 만들었다. 이는 한국 내에서 반미를 주장하는 사람들이 친LGBT임을 모르는 것이며, 미국과 주한미대사관에 우호적 시각을 갖고 있는 대다수 한국국민들에게 반감을 갖도록 만든 어리석은 행동인 것이다. 이는 명백히 해리스 대사의 실책이며, 주한미대사관직원들의 잘못이다.

다시 한 번 강조하지만, 한국에서는 한 남성과 한 여성의 결혼 원칙이 대한민국 헌법(제36조 1항)에 명기되어 있으며, 대중은 여전히 동성애에 대해 반대 감정을 갖고 있다. 그런데 어떻게 외국대사관이 대한민국 헌법과 대법원 판례를 무시할 수 있단 말인가. 이는 한국인을 무시하고 모욕한 행동이며, 다수 국민의 분노를 촉발하고 미국에 대해 우호적인 국민감정을 훼손하는 심각한 도발행위이다.

미국과 달리 그리니치 빌리지의 스톤월 폭동과 같은 역사는 한 번도 없었다. 한국에서는 게이 인구가 그처럼 작은 부분을 차지하고 있으며, 이에 대한 법적 제한은 없다. 동성애자로서의 개인의 자유는 주로 사적 영역에서 보류되어 왔으며, 조직적 사회 차별의 희생자가 아니었다. 따라서 대다수 한국인은 퀴어 페스티벌(Queer Festival)이 매우 외국적이고 성적으로 도발적이며 심지어 "괴상하다"고 보고 있다. 대다수 국민들은 이 행사의 개최를 원치 않고, 미국대사관은 최대 80퍼센트의 국민들이 퀴어 축제에 반대한다는 내용의 언론보도를 참고해야만 한다.

우리는 다시 한 번 외부세력인 미대사관이 자신의 분수에 맞게 동성애/LGBT 문제에 있어서 철저히 중립을 지킬 것을 요구한다. 대한민국 다수국민에게 비쟁점적 사안을 지나치게 쟁점화시켜 논란을 부추기려 들지 말아야 한다. 대한민국 다수국민은 동성애를 지지하지 않으며 그것에 어떠한 당위성도 인정하지 않는다.

미국과 달리, 대한민국에서 동성애자/LGBT들은 다른 모든 시민과 동등한 권리를 누려왔고 지금도 누리고 있다. 우리 헌법은 모든 국민에게 그들의 어떤 선천적 차이나 다름과 상관없이 평등한 권리와 보호를 추구한다.

많은 사람들이 동성애/LGBT 진영의 속임수에 속고 있다. 그들 동성애/LGBT 지지자들은 대중을 기만하고, 권력자에게 로비하고, 법의 허점을 악용하여 자신의 이기적이고, 자의적이고, 유해한 독단적 신념을 절대다수에게 강제하려고 애쓰고 있다. 그러나 이는 비열하고 반민주적인 독재적 발상이기에 비난받아 마땅하다.

우리는 다시 한 번 미합중국의 공식 대표자로서 무지개 "프라이드" 상징 현수막을 외관에 표시해 공개적지지 입장을 피력한 잘못을 규탄한다. 이는 오랜 파트너이자 친구인 주한 미대사관과 해리스 대사가 우리 역사와 헌법, 법률 및 대중의 감정을 훼손한 사건으로 절대 재발돼선 안 될 것이다. 우리는 주한미대사관과 해리스 대사에게 다음과 같이 요구한다.

하나, 주한미대사관과 해리스 대사는 또다시 다수 대한민국국민에게 상처를 준 행동 즉각 사과하라!

둘, 주한미대사관과 해리스 대사는 동성애/LGBT 상징 현수막 게시를 즉각 사과하라!

셋, 주한미대사관과 해리스 대사는 또다시 음란 동성애/LGBT 행사인 “퀴어 축제”에 참가해선 안 되며, 재발 강력 경고한다!

넷, 주한미대사관과 해리스 대사는 60년 넘도록 잘 유지해온 한미동맹 정신 훼손치 말고, 대한민국 국민들의 심기 거스르지 마라!

Statement of Condemnation of the US Embassy Seoul

We strongly demand the US Embassy in Korea, which insulted and trampled again Korean culture and people who are against homosexuality, to apologize to Korean people!

On May 27, last year, we held a press conference condemning the US Embassy in Seoul, which displayed the rainbow “Pride” colors on the façade of US Embassy in Gwangwhamun, and issued a statement. We then protested by phone and sent a English statement to Trump and Vice President Fence on Twitter. It was even reported to NBC News on June 8 last year that the Trump administration rejected requests by US embassies to raise the rainbow “Pride” colors on the flagpoles of embassies around the country during the June month of the LGBT celebration.

Nevertheless, the US Embassy in Seoul, during this year's another episode of Corona 19 (COVID-19), ended up detonating the rainbow “Pride” colors on the façade of US Embassy. This must be apologized immediately, as it is a brutality that trampled on Korean culture, ignoring the Korean people who are clearly against homosexuality.

In a statement last year, we pointed out the installation of a booth in the Queer Festival venue that undermined the strong 60-year alliance between the United States and South Korea and the posting of the rainbow “Pride” colors on the façade of the US Embassy in Gwanghwamun. We clearly pointed out that this was a serious insult to the Korean people, and that it was a wrong move that did not help the national interests of the United States at all.

Unfortunately, the US Embassy in Korea again broke the heart of the friendly Korean people this year. This is a stupid act that made people who claim to be anti-Americans in South Korea a pro-LGBT, and antagonized the majority of Koreans who have a favorable view of the US and the US Embassy in Korea. This is clearly the fault of Ambassador Harris, and the fault of the US Embassy staff in Korea.

Again, We'd like to emphasize, In Korea we strongly hold on to our principle of marriage between one man and one woman, which is clearly stipulated in the Korean Constitution (Article 36 (1)), and also the public at large still has a strong sentiment against homosexuality. In spite of this, how can a foreign embassy ignore our Constitution and Supreme Court precedents? This conduct ignores and insults Korean people, which provokes the anger of majority of people and seriously damages our amicable sentiment toward the United States.

Unlike in US, we have never had a history like the Stonewall Riots in the Greenwich village. In Korea gay population has accounted for such a small portion and there has been no legal restriction against them. Their individual freedoms as gay people have been mainly reserved in private sector and they have never been the victims of systematic social discrimination. So, for majority of Koreans, the Queer Festival looks very foreign, sexually provocative and even “queer”. Many parents and conservatives are very concerned about this “Foreign-Looking Festival” which will have negative effects on their children. Super majority of Korean people do not want to see this event held. We hope you to refer to current media reports covering that up to 80 percent of people are against the Queer Festival.

As stated in the foregoing, the US Embassy as a foreign entity must remain strictly neutral in homosexuality and LGBT issues, and stop politicizing LGBT issue, by making a huge issue of a non-issue to overwhelming majority of Koreans. Most Koreans do not support LGBT rights and do not find any justification for it.

In Korea, homosexuals and LGBTs alike have been and are enjoying the same rights as any other citizens. Our constitution seeks equal rights and protections for all its people regardless of any differences in their immutable traits.

Considering that so many people are deceived by homosexual/LGBT groups, we strongly condemn their dishonorable and anti-democratic attempts to forcefully impose their selfish, arbitrary, and harmful dogma upon the rest of the population by lying to public, lobbying people of power, and abusing loopholes in our legal system.

We, once again, as the official representatives of the United States, condemn the mistake of expressing a public support position by displaying the rainbow “Pride” colors on the façade. This should never be recurred as a longtime partner and friend of the US Embassy in Seoul and Ambassador Harris undermining our history, constitution, law and public sentiment. We ask the US Embassy in Seoul and Ambassador Harris to:

First, the US Embassy in Seoul and Ambassador Harris immediately apologize to Korean people for the relevant actions that hurt again many Korean people!

Second, the US Embassy in Seoul and Ambassador Harris immediately apologize for posting the Homosexual /LGBT symbolic placard!

Third, the US Embassy in Seoul and Ambassador Harris are not allowed to participate in the “Queer Festival” again, which is an obscene Homosexual/LGBT event, and warns against recurrence!

Fourth, the US Embassy in Seoul and Ambassador Harris should stop damaging the spirit of the ROK-US alliance, which has been well maintained for over 60 years, by hurting the feelings of the Korean people on this matter!
